Toi Gye

Toi Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th century), an authority on neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace on the 37° latitude, and the diagram represents "scholar".

1. Turn counter clockwise moving the left foot forming a right L-stance toward B while executing a middle side block with the left inner forearm.

2. Slip the left foot forming a left walking stance toward B, execute a low front thrust with the right upset fingertip.

3. Bring the left foot to the right foot to form a close stance toward D while executing a side back strike with the right backfist, extending the left arm to the side downward.

4. Turn clockwise moving the right foot forming a left L-stance toward A while executing a middle side block with the right inner forearm.

5. Slip the right foot forming a right walking stance toward A, execute a low front thrust to A with the left upset fingertip.

6. Bring the right foot to the left foot to form a close stance toward D while executing a side back strike with the left backfist, extending the right arm to the side downward.

7. Step forward with the left foot forming a left walking stance toward D while executing a pressing block with an X-fist.

8. Maintain a left walking stance toward D, execute a high vertical punch with a twin fist.

10. Lower the right foot forming a right walking stance toward D while executing a middle front punch with the right forefist.

20. Slip the left foot forming a left walking stance toward D, extend both hands upward as if to grab the opponent's head .

21. Execute an upward kick with the right knee while pulling both hands downward into the chest.

22. Lower the right foot to the left foot and then turn counter clockwise moving the left foot forming a right L-stance toward C while executing a middle guarding block with a knifehand.

23. Execute a low side front snap kick to C with the left foot, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 22.

24. Lower the left foot forming a left walking stance toward C while executing a high front thrust with the left flat fingertip.

25. Step forward with the right foot forming a left L-stance toward C while executing a middle guarding block with a knifehand.

26. Execute a low side front snap kick to C with the right foot, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 25.

27. Lower the right foot forming a right walking stance toward C while executing a high front thrust with the right flat fingertip.

29. Jump forward with the right foot forming a right X-stance toward A while executing a pressing block with an X-fist.

30. Turn clockwise moving the right foot forming a right walking stance toward C while executing a high side block with the right double forearm.

31. Turn counter clockwise moving the left foot forming a right L-stance toward B while executing a low guarding block with a knifehand.

32. Slip the left foot forming a left walking stance toward B, execute a middle circular block with the right inner forearm.

33. Bring the left foot to the right foot and then turn clockwise moving the right foot forming a left L-stance toward A, while executing a low guarding block with a knifehand.

34. Slip the right foot forming a right walking stance toward A, execute a middle circular block with the left inner forearm.

35. Turn counter clockwise forming a left walking stance toward BD, execute a middle circular block with the right inner forearm.

36. Turn clockwise forming a right walking stance toward A, execute a middle circular block with the left inner forearm.

37. Step with the right foot on line AB forming a sitting stance toward D while executing a middle front punch with the right forefist.
